As we celebrate International Women’s Day we thought we would profile some of our great business women.

We spoke to Melanie Armstrong from Photography for Little People by Melanie, a photography company based in Chester-le-Street.

Melanie set up her business in 2005 with her mother, just after she had her second child.

The business grew from strength to strength and the mother and daughter team franchised their business in 2008.

Today they have 12 franchises and not only have they survived the pandemic they have been able to grow their business too.

Chester le Street Studio

Melanie says; “I have a beautiful studio in Chester Le Street, within Window to the Womb, which is my sisters scan clinic.

“I have specialised in newborn and family photography for over 15 years now and love every minute of it. Many babies that come for a newborn shoot are just days old.

Melanie is a trainer in the art of safety in newborn photography she guarantees the new babies are in safe hands.

She adds; “I also specialise in taking little impressions of children’s hands and feet, the youngest was just 6 hours new. These really are stunning and very popular with my families.

Covid-19

The pandemic saw Melanie having to close her studio during lockdown however she has stayed in touch with her families and created videos to help families take those early images for home as they are not able to get into the studio at this time.

During the first lockdown she was featured in the Evening Chronicle, one of her local newspapers about how she worked with families. Click here to read the article.

Future of Photography for Little People by Melanie

Melanie has big aims for the company moving forward.

“Not only I want the business to continue to grow nationally, but to continue to provide a special experience for my families from the North East.

“I am usually booked out months in advance and will always go above and beyond to create those special memories for families.

So what is the advantage of running a business?

Melanie adds; “I love the freedom to work around my family.

With having run a successful business since 2005, Melanie has advice for others looking to start their own business.

“I would always encourage others to start their own business. Enjoy that freedom and be proud of following your dreams.

“It is hard work and it can be lonely, but with the right support it can be amazing.
