Terrace Cupcakes is a home business setup by Hannah Dixon offering amazing cakes.

We spoke to Hannah as part of our campaign supporting International Women’s Day.

“The idea of Terrace Cupcakes started in my kitchen back in 2015, I was always baking for family, friends and colleagues. I had always made cakes since I was a teenager and I thought wouldn’t it be great if this was my job.

“Back then the online cake industry was almost non existent so I continued to bake for those around me.”

Terrace Cupcakes Launch

“As I moved through my next few jobs, I continued to bake and slowly built up a following of avid cake lovers. Eventually cakes became a bit more of a thing and I saw my opportunity.

“Between moving house, changing jobs and having my children, I opened Terrace Cupcakes back in 2017 for family and friends before officially opening for orders in 2019.

That year Hannah obtained a 5 star Food Hygiene Rating from Durham County Council and since then the business has gone from strength to strength.

Celebration Cakes

“In this time I have had the privilege of making all kinds of birthday cakes and cupcakes, wedding and celebration cakes.

“More recently I have seen a very high demand in postal brownies which I have been able to post all over the country for those who are not local to Consett.

When Covid-19 hit the country hard Hannah has had to adapt the business which has been tough.

“When we entered the first lock down, almost a year ago, I started out with the mantra that the only way we will get though this, is to get through this together.

“What I’ve seen over the year is that although the parties and weddings have been put on hold, the celebrations have not.

“What I’ve seen is the shift from massive celebration cakes to smaller cakes with personalised postal brownies being posted to their loved ones so they can be included too.

Lovely Messages

“I’ve seen so many lovely messages being sent to loved ones to wish them well, to cheer them up and simply spread some happiness during such trying times.

Hannah has got some exciting plans that she has had to put on hold due to Covid.

“For now, I’m focusing on growing my business organically and I’ve found that the best way to do this has been via word of mouth from my wonderful customers.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my adventure so far and can not wait to see what the future holds!
